Elephant photography in golden light
$129 · 2 hours · Max 4 guests
For Serious Cameras

Two hours. Golden light. Six elephants.

For travelers carrying real glass. Extended access, dedicated mahout assistance, and the best light Jaipur offers — capped at four guests so no one's in your frame.

What's different

Built for the camera.

Golden hour, guaranteed

Sessions run 6:30-8:30 AM or 4:30-6:30 PM. We work with the light, not against it. No mid-day flat light.

Maximum 4 guests

Smaller group means clearer compositions, more time per elephant, no one wandering into your shot.

Mahout-assisted setups

A senior mahout works with you on positioning — getting an elephant to lift the trunk, turn the head, hold still for portraits.

The shot list

What you'll come away with.

  • Eye portraits — close-up of the elephant's eye, lashes catching golden light. The image everyone remembers from a session.
  • The drink — trunk submerged in pond, water arcing out as they spray themselves. Slow shutter for the spray; fast shutter for sharp droplets.
  • Forehead painting — the herbal-pigment ritual, mahout's hand visible. Strong narrative shot.
  • Walking-together silhouette — guest beside elephant on the forest trail, low angle, backlit by sunrise/sunset.
  • Detail shots — texture of ears, wrinkles, the scarred ankle (telling the rescue story).
  • Mahout-elephant bond — the moment a mahout greets his elephant in the morning. Pure documentary.
For nerds

Technical notes.

If you're traveling with serious gear, here's what to expect — light, distance, gear recommendations.

Recommended lens range
24-70mm for environmental shots, 70-200mm for portraits, 35mm prime for storytelling. A wide (16-24mm) works for whole-body context shots.
Light conditions
Golden hour 30 min before/after sunrise. Sunset golden is softer. Both are usable. Auto-ISO works fine; manual gives you more control over the spray-shutter trade-off.
Working distance
1-3 meters from elephants. They're calm but you should not approach without your mahout's nod.
Tripods
Allowed and welcomed — bring one for the pond shots if you want long exposures. Monopod is often better for mobility.
Drones
With advance permit only ($50, takes 2 days to arrange). Sanctuary has restricted airspace approval; we apply for you.
Backup gear
Bring a second body and lens cloths. Pond spray, dust, and quick subject changes will test your gear.
Output rights
You own everything you shoot. The sanctuary asks only that posts tag them so future travelers can find them. We'll send the tag handle on the day.
