Direct vs split — the honest comparison
Direct (9 hrs): right if Jaisalmer time matters most — leave 6 AM, reach by late afternoon, sunset at Gadisar Lake. Via Jodhpur or Bikaner (2 days): right for first-time Rajasthan travellers — you effectively get a bonus city for one hotel night and ₹400 driver halt. Most guests who ask us pick the split and thank us later.
Why not the train?
The Jaipur–Jaisalmer trains are overnight and workable for backpackers. But for families and groups, the cab wins on flexibility: Shekhawati or Mehrangarh en route, luggage door to door, and the desert highway itself — the last 100 km past wind farms into dune country is part of the experience.
